Welcome to April! I hope you are all enjoying the bit of warm weather we’ve had lately. This past week was spring break for our boys. While we didn’t adventure anywhere outside of Michigan this year, we took the opportunity to take a day trip and cross off another State Park. We knew it was going to be an unseasonably warm day, so we opted for a park near the water.

PJ Hoffmaster or sometimes just called Hoffmaster State Park, is in Muskegon MI.

One of the park’s main attractions is the dune climb along the Dune Overlook Trail, an approximately half-mile roundtrip climb with about 220 steps and benches along the way. At the top, there are two observation platforms offering a panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the sand dunes. This is the trail we chose to do, going for the great views! The trailhead can be accessed near the park’s visitor center.

The trial is well groomed, and clean. The first part is a nice flat and wide wheelchair friendly path before it heads into the woods. There are some really old, big trees in this park, which my boys really loved. Sunshine was coming in from all directions and it made the hike pretty magical.

The overlook felt like a huge accomplishment after climbing the 220 stairs to the top! (Scroll up to the first photo to see the view!)

This was a record for our boys. Swimming in Lake MI on April 7th! They didn’t stay in the water long, since it was a balmy 39 degrees, but I have to give them credit for their want to swim in the lake, no matter the temperature.

We saw a very SMALL part of this park between the dune overlook trail and the beach. I spotted several trails as we were driving around, and we didn’t get a chance to check out the campground. I can’t wait to come back here and do many more trails, and a camping trip. Keeping it on our list for future adventures!
