Did you know Belle Isle is the largest city-owned park in the U.S.? It also houses the oldest continually-running conservatory in the United States. There is SO much history here.

On our journey to explore all the State Parks, we ventured to Belle Isle State Park in Detroit this spring for a day. You could fill a book about the rise and fall, and now the growth the DNR is overseeing. In 2014 Belle Isle became Michigan’s 102nd State Park as part of a 30-year lease agreement with the city.

At over 900 acres, there’s a lot of ground to cover, and many updates and repairs to do. Still, there is beauty in the cracks. A brand new playground was one of the things we really had fun spending some time at. Greyson J especially loved this part of the park.

I think my favorite part of the park is the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. We visited the park on a chilly day in April, and it was so warm inside. There were beautiful plants at every corner, and it was just beautiful.

The conservatory is free, and is open Wed.-Sunday 10am-5pm.

The Conservatory is divided into various houses and areas, including a cactus house and tropical house, where we saw bananas growing!

At the end of the day, we were just in awe of all the things happening at this park, and excited for the future of it. We hope you get a chance to cross this one off your list!
